I've been doing verm, coco, and manure in a pillow case. I put the pillow case in a large pot of hot water on the stove and keep it almost simmering for about 2 hours. If you sterilize your bulk then it needs to be spawned in a sterile environment.

Well only had like a quart of vermiculite left so i mixed it with peat moss, brf, D.E. powder, did my famous stove top sterilize and its going great. No those spots are not contaminants

Diatomaceous earth is actually good in my opinion alot of benefits, its very porous, holds water, acts as a ph buffer, etc.
