It is ground into a paste and then added to either milk or water with spices and sugar to suit. It is the most popular form that is used in India, particularly during major festivals such as Holi, Dussehra and Shivratri, as well as weddings, funerals and other important family festivals;The importance of bhang in Indian culture was beautifully summed up by Mr J.M Campbell, an elderly tax collector for the British Government who lived in Bombay in the 19th century;“To forbid or even seriously to restrict the use of so holy and gracious a herb as the hemp, would cause widespread suffering and annoyance and to the large bands of worshipped ascetics, deep-seated anger. It would rob the people of a solace in discomfort, of a cure in sickness, of a guardian whose gracious protection saves them from the attacks of evil influences, and whose mighty power makes the devotee of the Victorious, overcoming the demons of hunger and thirst, of panic, fear of the glamour of Maya or matter, and of madness, able to rest to look on the Eternal, till the Eternal, possessing him body and soul, frees him from the haunting of self and receives him into the ocean of Being”.I can only endorse what Mr Campbell said, and I think it proves beyond doubt, that there were a few British living in India, who understood the importance of social and religious values of the indigenous population, it is only a pity that there were not more like him.One thing I would like to stress before finishing this section, is to emphasise the spiritual significance of bhang drinking and ganja and charas smoking, because this is the aspect that is sacred, not only for sadhus, Shaivites, rishis, babas and temple priests, but to all Hindus. In the village of Bauri in Gaya there is a large hollow stone. Local legends say that it is the bowl of a famous folk hero called Lorik, who used it to mix his bhang, before going into battle. Other epic poems from the 12th century, contain stories about brave warriors drinking bhang before performing magnificent feats of courage. Within this context, the cannabis plant is not a narcotic and it is not a drug, but a mythical, sacred stimulant, and one which demands the greatest respect of all those who use it. Mr Campbell was well aware of this, as he so eloquently said; “He who scandalises the user of bhang shall suffer the torments of hell so long as the sun endures. He who drinks bhang foolishly or for pleasure without religious rites is as guilty as the sinner of a hundred thousand sins. He who drinks wisely and according to rule, be he ever so low, even though his body is smeared with human excrement and urine, is Shiva.
