It’s been a crazy summer. I return home from the redwoods to the Sonoran desert for a cardiologist appointment (I am old). My daughter in law saw a spot on my back she didn’t like so I promised I’d see a dermatologist as well. Well, cardiologist was fine and the spot on my back was fine. But they did four other biopsies on other spots. Two weeks later I’m ready to head back to the redwoods and I get the call - it’s cancer. I have a malignant melanoma (get your skin checked kids!). They quickly hustle to get me into surgery. Post surgery I’m ready to go camping, but doctor tells me to reschedule as the healing will take longer than I think. I rescheduled for Sept. I see an oncologist (never wanted one of those). I think I’m ready to head back to the redwoods. Fires there break out and the area where I was suppose to be camping burned to the ground (Smith River Fire Complex 50,000 acres). So that sucks. Then I see a hurricane is headed this way so I tuck in and it takes off one side of the roof on my tiny house. Shit.

So camping cancelled, my favorite camping spot is wiped off the earth, cancer, surgery and my roof partially taken off by a hurricane. All in one fucking 30 day period. Sheesh!

But here is the thing. I’m coping so well. I live alone and I am by myself out here this time of year. I drove myself to the cancer surgery. I’ve been alone this whole time. And I’m fine. Totally fine, albeit a tad stressed over the idea of cancer. But I’m still feeling strong and not defeated.

If you have made it this far, here is my point. I did a big mushie dose when I got home (5 grams) a week before all this started, and I microdose mushies three days a week ( have been for over three years now, steady. Off and on for six years). I am off my antidepressants, off my PTSD medication, off all mental health meds. I have a bipolar diagnosis. And I’m fine. I’m mentally strong, I’m focused, I’m sleeping, I’m sane. It’s a great feeling, to not be a mess when lots of shit is hitting the fan. It feels good. I’m good. Life is good. Thank the gods for the mushrooms.

I’m glad to hear despite the obstacles your mental health is doing well. I know all too well what a mental health relapse feels like, and I am thankful you don’t have to deal with that on top of everything else. Hugs.
