If it's all still liquid, running it through a coffee filter will probably catch the black stuff. Re-X is always a good idea though because it's amazing how many tiny pieces of gunk make it through.

Re-X means recrystallize. Once you have done your crystals, dissolve them in in a fresh solvent and transfer via pipette to another container, leaving all the little brown bits that didn't dissolve behind.
