Hi, have never tried ID or picking agaricus (not a mushroom eater really..????) but Im really interested in fungi. This was growing under paperbark and sheoak. There's no yellow stain I can see, even after squishing the stem and scratching the cap - but not red either? Heated a piece in a pan and no odd smell ~ no discolouration either, just regular mushroom smell. Friend said it smelt delicious when he walked in the kitchen ~ he had a sniff of the raw and cooked and no chemical smell. Found in Perth.
Does anyone know the species? Would it be safe to eat based on all that?

It looks like a field mushroom to me, Agaricus campestris. The young one has pink gills. I pick these in late summer / autumn, they are tasty.

A misidentified mushroom can kill you. Some even if you show up at Australia's best emergency room after you eat it. Even experienced mushroom hunters make mistakes. Please don't take random strangers opinions on the internet as good advice for safe eating.

I only say this because whenever he has given me info, I look it up in my ... View More

My friend said it's a button mushroom, told him someone else said it looked like a field mushroom and he said they're the same species, both are edible, I asked him how sure he was that it's edible and he said he's 99.9% sure it's edible, but also said of course he's not the one eating it. He helped... View More
